What is an original print?

A brief history of Indigenous Printmaking
Links

Basil Hall Editions (BHE) was established in 2002. The studio is located in tropical Darwin in the far north of Australia and is available to artists and art centres who wish to collaborate with experienced printers in the production of most forms of printmaking.

In addition to its Indigenous and non-Indigenous clients in cities Australia-wide, BHE has  worked in 2007-8 with over 150 artists from 15 remote communities in Northern Territory, Western Australia and South Australia. Boasting one of the most experienced teams currently working with Indigenous artists in Australia, BHE employs up to 5 printers, who regularly run printmaking workshops in Art Centres or host visiting artists in BHE's Darwin studio. The BHE workshop is fully equipped for etching, silkscreen and relief printing.

Basil has been working with Australian and overseas artists for nearly 25 years,  as Director of Studio One in Canberra, Northern Editions in Darwin and Basil Hall Editions.

About BHE

BHE has 3 experienced printmakers regularly working at the studio and employs others as needed.

We have the following equipment:
2 x Hilton Tooling motorised presses (bed size 1.7 x 1.0m)
1 x MES etching press (22" bed width)
1 x antique lithographic press for smaller stones
1 x silkscreen vacuum table and exposure facilities for screens.
1 x photo plate exposure unit
Light box, aquatint room, fume cupboard and drying racks.

Visiting artists may use the studio by arrangement and have access to etching and aquatint facilities and the presses at a negotiated rate. A printer can also be available at an hourly or daily rate to assist, by appointment.

WHAT CAN BASIL HALL EDITIONS DO FOR YOU?

Our goals are:
1. To be a centre of printmaking excellence, providing expert assistance to artists who wish to collaborate in the making of etchings, silkscreen prints, relief prints and collagraphs.
2. To jointly seek sponsorship for and to initiate printmaking projects with artists, art centres and galleries.
3. To provide a comprehensive service from consultation with artists, arts advisors or gallery staff through plate-making, proofing and editioning with the artist to the publication and marketing of the prints.
4. To work with a selected number of artists each year, ensuring individual attention and prompt production.

If your proposal fits with any of the above, give us a call! Editioning your prints need not be expensive. We can travel to you, or you can come to Darwin and work in the beautiful new facilities at BHE. Inexpensive accommodation can be arranged nearby. What are you waiting for? Several hundred artists over the last 20 years have enjoyed working with Basil and his printers in a professional environment where your needs come first.
