I have finally had my woodcut tools out to do a series of works myself for a Southern Highlands Printmakers exhibition at Goulburn Regional Gallery next week. The exhibition is called “Continuum” and participating printmakers selected an artist who had lived or worked at some time in our region. Our own works drew inspiration from the previous generation’s style, subject matter or life. I selected photographer David Moore, who attended Tudor House School in Moss Vale, as I did, and whose 1966 photograph entitled “Migrants Arriving in Sydney” contrasted so strongly with current press photos of migrants arriving by sea, I was inspired to examine the subject further. This woodcut, hand-printed over a silkscreened image on Iwaki paper, is entitled “Less Plains” in reference to the lofty and apparently misguided aims expressed in our notional anthem.
