One of the first days of our 2013 printmaking workshops in Greece was spent drawing en plein air a few kilometres from the studio. We took the Glisteri road and walked up an old calderimi track to a clearing on the right which contained a small church. Some of our artists settled in to draw here, while the others spread out through a small olive grove to the left of the path. The grove afforded an excellent view over the Skopelos Town harbour and across to neighbouring Alonnissos Island.

Three of the participants in our May-June 2013 workshop working on a large group devised copper plate etching which will be editioned back in Australia at Basil Hall Editions. The piece will measure 120 x 80cms and the subject matter will inevitably concern itself with Greek cuisine. The workshop will wind up on Sunday June 9 after two wonderful weeks of en plein air drawing, studio work, visits to beaches, monasteries and tavernas and plenty of camaraderie. Everyone has stayed in the apartments above the studio, so most meals have been taken together, starting with breakfast at 8.30am in the drawing room and finishing up with pre-dinner drinks at 7-30 and dinner at one of the many tavernas in town.

The lucky participants in the 2013 printmaking workshops on Skopelos will begin arriving today. The island is turning on a beautiful spring, with wildflowers and herbs growing in great profusion. Everywhere, houses in the village are being spruced up with fresh whitewash on their already gleaming walls and coats of (blue) paint on their shutters. Soon the peaches and apricots will be arriving in the local supermarkets. Already artichokes and new season tomatoes, cucumbers and zucchinis have appeared in the tavernas, delighting the first of the 2013 tourists. Basil and Steph are beginning to get the studio ready for the May 27 workshop, which will kick off with a drawing session in the country and a fabulous dinner on the waterfront in the evening. Mieke Cohen from Sydney has just concluded her residency in the studio and will make way now for the eight artists who start next week.

Printmaker, Antonia Aitken has been assisting Basil with a number of new editions for Beswick, Iwantja Arts in Indulkana, Kaltjiti Arts in Fregon and Mimili Maku. Here Antonia is placing the paper over a new collagraph by Indulkana artist Whiskey Tjukangu. The collagraph block is actually a painted and carved woodblock, inked up intaglio. It has been supported in a specially cut frame surround, which acts as a press runner and assists Antonia with the registration of the print.

Because the BHE silkscreen gear is still on its way from Darwin, we accessed Megalo’s fine workshop in its last few weeks at the Watson studio before it closed in order to relocate to Kingston.
Yes, it is about making prints and learning some new tricks, but two or three weeks on the beautiful island of Skopelos gives participants in our popular workshops more than enough time to explore, sail to neighbouring islands, visit neolithic tombs, walk up pine clad hills and along ancient goat tracks through scenic farmland and along the rugged coastal escarpment. What would we do without adjectives? We are taking enrolments for next year’s workshops on Skopelos. They are proposed to be in June-July (a little later than this year’s two). Just email Basil (see contact page) and get your name down. No deposit needed yet.
