A brief history of Indigenous Printmaking
Links

Basil Hall Editions (BHE) was established in 2002. The studio is located in tropical Darwin in the far north of Australia and is available to artists and art centres who wish to collaborate with experienced printers in the production of most forms of printmaking.

In addition to its Indigenous and non-Indigenous clients in cities Australia-wide, BHE has  worked in 2007-8 with over 150 artists from 15 remote communities in Northern Territory, Western Australia and South Australia. Boasting one of the most experienced teams currently working with Indigenous artists in Australia, BHE employs up to 5 printers, who regularly run printmaking workshops in Art Centres or host visiting artists in BHE's Darwin studio. The BHE workshop is fully equipped for etching, silkscreen and relief printing.

Basil has been working with Australian and overseas artists for nearly 25 years,  as Director of Studio One in Canberra, Northern Editions in Darwin and Basil Hall Editions.

CUSTODIANS

Custodians is a collection of etchings and screenprints by ten of the finest Indigenous artists currently working in Australia.

Co-published by BHE, Nomad Art (Darwin) and Alison Kelly Gallery (Melbourne), Custodians comes as a boxed set (limited to only 25 sets) but the prints are also available individually. Custodians opened in August 2008 in Darwin (Nomad) and, a week later, in Melbourne (Alison Kelly Gallery). From 25 September it will be seen as part of the Basil Hall Editions survey exhibition "Etched in the Sun" at the ANU Drill Hall Gallery in Canberra. It will then move in November to the Depot Gallery in Danks St, Sydney and in December to the Adelaide Festival Centre.

NEWS UPDATES

  • Basil Hall Editions is pleased to announce the arrival of new printer, Mats Unden. Mats is from Sweden, where he ran his own printmaking business for 15 years, specialising in intaglio. He has travelled extensively and as part of some formal study in Australian Indigenous art,  visited Australia in 2002. During that trip, Mats met Basil and also visited a number of Aboriginal communities. After 5 years of emails, Mats is finally here and we wish him a happy time at BHE.
  • Custodians (see above) has been launched at Nomad Art and Alison Kelly Gallery to an enthusiastic reception. Well over half of the folios have already been ordered, so collectors are advised to contact either gallery to reserve one of these important sets before it's too late!
  • Etched in the Sun (opening at the Australian National University's Drill Hall Gallery in Canberra on September 25) is the first major survey of Indigenous prints to be seen since Northern Editions' Land Mark:Mirror Mark at the same venue in 2000. Featuring etchings, relief prints, punugraphs and silkscreens by over 150 artists from 25 communities and a number of urban centres, Etched in the Sun will be opened by Andrew Blake, Co-ordinator of Buku Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre in Yirrkala and will run until November 3. It is presented by the National Centre for Indigenous Studies and has been curated by Djon Mundine and Nancy Sever from workshop and printers' proofs spanning the years 1996-2008. Etched in the Sun celebrates 12 years of collaborative printmaking between Basil and his teams at Northern Editions and BHE and the enormously talented group of Indigenous artists they have had the priviledge of working with.
